November 20th Health Fair at Evans Community Adult School

On November 20th more than 1,000 students from Evans Community Adult School (Evans CAS), an LA Unified Division of Adult and Career Education School, attended a health fair in which twenty community partners were able to share information about the health services they offer. Participants included:

  • Amanecer Community Counseling Service
  • APLA Health
  • Arroyo Vista Family Health Center
  • Belize Cancer Society of California
  • Chinatown Service Center
  • City of Los Angeles Office of The City Attorney - Victim Assistance Unit
  • Eisner Health
  • LA County Department of Mental Health
  • LAUSD Children’s Health Access and Medi-Cal Programs (LAUSD CHAMP)
  • Para Los Niños
  • Saban Community Clinic
  • UCLA Community Engagement’s Allied Healthcare Careers Program
  • YWCA Greater Los Angeles Sexual Assault Crisis Services

The Health Fair also included free HIV testing by the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) in addition to free blood pressure, blood sugar, vision, and pulse oximetry screenings by CVS Pharmacy along with Evans CAS’s Medical Assistant students. During the Health Fair, the students were able to help several of the attendees identify serious health issues warranting immediate medical attention, including high blood pressure, extremely low blood pressure and ear infections.

To encourage the attendees to learn more about the physical and mental health resources available in our community, English as a Second Language (ESL) students participated in a scavenger hunt while Academic and Career Technical Education (CTE) students were given a writing reflection activity requiring them to interact with and get information from the participating agencies.

The Health Fair was just one event during Evans CAS’s Health Awareness Month. Other on-campus events included free mammograms for students through Alinea Medical Imaging and free eye exams, including free glasses for eligible students, through the Tzu Chi Medical Foundation.
